This work was created for an exhibition curated by Critical Edge Collective (UK), Best Before Collective (Sweden) and a collection of Berlin-based artists. Embracing the Mail Art philosophy, Par Avion showcased an exciting new body of work by artists from Berlin, Stockholm and London who shared and responded to the research that underpins their practices. This interactive research project looked at ways to connect and collaborate with other locations and cultures in ways that could foster meaningful artistic exchange. Developing over a six month period, the participating artists sent each other envelopes, not of artworks, but of the things that inspired them to make works. In response to the received envelope, each artist developed a body of work which was shown in a group exhibition held at Neurotitan Gallery in Berlin.

Exploring the idea of correspondence art, this body of work responds to the research of Siri Bertling Kara in a semi-fictitious travelogue through the South Western United States. Taking the form of a series of letters, the narrative engages with Kara’s research into hydrofeminism, hypersea and natural ephemera in a narrative that crosses centuries, encountering Native American mythology in Arizona, the standardisation of time in Utah, UFOs in Nevada and menacing A.I. in California.

Taking the form of a video-essay, publication and a series of inkjet prints pinned directly to the gallery wall, the project explored the landscape as a construct, mediated through grand-narratives and technological advances.
