Baucis II (detail)

Developing out of the 'Invisible Cities' project created for the exhibition 'From the Ground Up' at Lewisham ArtHouse, this painting is the cumulation of research and experimentation around the 1972 Italo Calvino novel 'Invisible Cities'.

Created through a long and laborious process of layering, several images created by an A.I. image generator that had been fed chapters of Calvino's novel were painted on top of each-other with the final layer omitting the darker values in order to reveal the traces of palimpsest images that had previously inhabited the canvas. A material experiment that was preceded by the printed works 'Baucis', 'Zirma' and 'Ersilia', once again the image-making process takes on a semiotic meaning, the layering and obfuscation of images operates as an investigation into the way that memory and history are created within a singular temporal plane.
